Marvin Jones, a wide receiver with the Detroit Lions, said on Tuesday that he will be leaving the organization due to family matters. The organization then chose to release him, according to reports from NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Jones gave an explanation for his choice in an Instagram post, writing, “To put it briefly, I’m taking a step back from the team to take care of personal family affairs. Even though it wasn’t an easy decision, I believe that I cannot simultaneously care for my family and be the player or person this team needs at this time.”
It’s important to note that during Detroit’s Week 7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Jones did not start for the first time this season.

He signed a $3 million one-year contract in the offseason to rejoin the Detroit Lions for his twelfth NFL season. But this season, the seasoned player hasn’t produced much. Out of the 10 passes sent his way, he only made five receptions for a total of 35 yards, and he hasn’t scored any touchdowns. He is tied for seventh place on the team in terms of targets with the sidelined running back David Montgomery. The teenage wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has been one of the league’s best players lately. Furthermore, Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond have made unexpected contributions and rookie tight end Sam LaPorta has had a strong start. Jameson Williams has also come back from his ban.
Although Jones hasn’t spoken about retiring, he’s had a great NFL career and will be 33 years old if he chooses to do so. The Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draught. He played with the Bengals for four seasons (one while on injured reserve) and the Jacksonville Jaguars for two seasons in 2021 and 2022. Additionally, he played for the Detroit Lions twice: once in 2017–2020 and again this year.
Jones participated in 151 games during his career, starting 118 of them. In all, he caught 547 passes for 7,421 receiving yards and 58 touchdowns.

Due to unspecified personal matters, 33-year-old Jones did not travel with the Lions to their Week 7 matchup against the Ravens and did not start in the starting lineup. He stated unequivocally on social media on Tuesday that he will not be joining the team again.
Jones wrote in his post how much he loved the Ford family, Detroit, his coaches, and his teammates. He gave an explanation, saying he was leaving the squad to take care of some pressing family issues. Even though it was a tough choice, he believes that he cannot support his family from a distance and still give the team his all as a player and a person. He also expressed gratitude to the organization for all of its years of continuous support and affection.
Jones continued by expressing his support for his coaches and teammates and reiterating that he would be there for them at every turn. He thinks they could accomplish amazing things this year.
Although Jones’s absence from the team wasn’t “serious,” Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters on Monday that he didn’t think so. However, he didn’t elaborate on Jones’ potential future with the team.

The Cincinnati Bengals originally drafted Marvin Jones in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draught. Before agreeing to a big $40 million contract with the Detroit Lions in free agency in 2016, he played for the Bengals for four years. He recorded some of his finest career numbers while he was a member of the Detroit Lions, particularly in 2017 when he had an exceptional season that included 61 receptions for 1,101 yards and nine touchdowns. Up until 2020, he kept playing with the Lions.
